Success Story

Developing a Custom Web App for ISO Limited

ISO Limited, now part of Qube Ports, were keen to reduce the double handling of safety information across New Zealand's ports. Dynamo6 helped define and develop a custom web app and a shared Ship Safety Database to do just that, creating a single source of truth for the entire industry.

As one of New Zealand's leading port logistics companies, ISO Limited's operations require watertight health and safety procedures. Before unloading cargo, surveyors must inspect each vessel for hazards. However, with many independent stevedoring companies operating across New Zealand's ports, this critical safety information was siloed. Each company would conduct its own separate inspections, leading to duplicated effort and a lack of shared knowledge across the industry.

Recognising an opportunity to lead the industry in improving safety and operational efficiency, ISO Limited decided there was a better way for stevedoring companies to work together. They needed a technology partner to help define and develop a centralised solution that would work for surveyors and stevedores on mobile devices in a busy port environment, with the vision of it becoming an industry-standard tool.

Our approach

  • 01

    Discovery & Pragmatic Design

We began with a discovery phase to understand the user journeys and technical requirements for a 'Ship Safety Vessel Database'. Through this business analysis process, we challenged initial requirements to deliver maximum value within the budget. For example, we identified that a costly real-time integration with a marine traffic API wasn't necessary for the MVP, saving the client significant ongoing expense. A waterfall project methodology was used to provide budget certainty and a clear path to its go-live date.

  • 02

    Prototyping & Technical Build

Taking the agreed-upon product requirements, we moved into prototyping and wireframing to refine the user experience, focusing on a mobile-first design for staff on the go. The application was then built using Silverstripe CMS and hosted on the highly configurable and scalable Google Cloud Platform. This technology choice was ideal for a product that could see ongoing feature development.

  • 03

    Deployment Ahead of Schedule

Our team managed the full development lifecycle, delivering a fully functioning and tested web app well ahead of the required deadline. The final solution includes capabilities for sharing inspection results and multimedia uploads against a specific vessel, all accessible to authorised stevedoring companies.

The results

The custom-developed web app delivered a streamlined solution to a complex, industry-wide problem. The application is now administered by the Ports Industry Association, providing a single source of truth for the entire industry. The impact of this solution is significant when considering the scale of operations across New Zealand's ports:

  • It helps reduce the double handling of information for the 6,500 to 8,500 cargo vessels that arrive in New Zealand annually.

  • It streamlines port operations by allowing surveyors and stevedores from all 9 stevedoring companies to access and log safety information quickly and efficiently from mobile devices.

  • It provides a valuable industry resource that helps to improve overall vessel safety for all workers across New Zealand's ports.
