A Digital Platform to Preserve and Promote Māori Music

Dynamo6 partnered with Te Ipukarea Research Institute to redevelop Tāmata Toiere, an innovative digital platform designed to preserve and promote Māori music. The revitalised website provides a user-friendly and culturally rich gateway to an extensive library of waiata (songs) and kapa haka (performances) for enthusiasts, learners, and researchers worldwide.

Te Ipukarea Research Institute, part of AUT, is a leading organisation dedicated to the preservation and revitalisation of Māori language and culture. Recognising that waiata are vital cultural taonga (treasures), the institute needed to modernise its existing Tāmata Toiere platform to ensure these musical traditions were not only protected but also made accessible to a new generation of digital audiences.

The challenge was to create a platform that was more than a simple archive. It needed to be an engaging and intuitive experience—a "Spotify for waiata"—that could respectfully house a comprehensive collection of songs while providing deep cultural context for a global audience.

    Discovery & Planning

    Our approach began with a deep, collaborative discovery phase, prioritising respect for the cultural significance of the content. We worked closely with the institute and designers skilled in Te Ao Māori to ensure the project's foundation was grounded in the principles of Te Ao Māori. This process allowed us to define a clear strategic plan that honoured the project's cultural integrity.

    Solution Design & Implementation

    Based on our discoveries, we translated the culturally rich design into a modern and robust technical solution. The development was guided by the design's purpose, thoughtfully integrating traditional colour schemes and imagery, such as the pūtōrino-inspired logo. Our team built the core platform, developing a comprehensive song library with powerful search tools and multi-lingual support to ensure a seamless user experience.

    Launch & Support

    The final phase focused on delivering a secure and scalable digital home for this important taonga. We launched the responsive website and mobile applications, making the collection accessible to users everywhere. To ensure long-term preservation and availability, we provide ongoing Application Hosting and Management, guaranteeing the Tāmata Toiere platform remains a reliable and secure resource for the global community.
