Domain Name Commission’s Empowered Workplace

Improving security posture and enhancing cross-platform collaboration were high on the agenda for the Domain Name Commission. Dynamo6 delivered a new, secure Microsoft 365 environment from the ground up, empowering their team and solving long-standing collaboration challenges.

The Domain Name Commission (DNC) operates in close coordination with its parent organisation, InternetNZ, sharing office space and, until recently, IT infrastructure. A strategic decision by InternetNZ to move fully to Google Workspace, while DNC remained on Microsoft, created significant collaboration challenges. Their existing IT provider was unable to resolve the interoperability issues, making even simple tasks like booking shared meeting rooms difficult.

Compounding this was an impending office move, which created a time-critical need to decommission their on-premise file server. The DNC needed a partner with expertise in both Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace to architect a new, independent solution that would not only separate their systems but also elevate their security and empower their team.

Our approach

  • 01

    Discovery & Strategic Design

We began with a Best Practice Review of the shared Microsoft 365 tenant. This technical discovery uncovered risks as well as revealed a major opportunity: the DNC was eligible for free not-for-profit licenses they weren't using. Based on these findings, we made the strategic recommendation to build a new, secure "greenfield" tenant from scratch rather than trying to remediate the old one.

  • 02

    Implementation & Migration

Our team implemented the new Microsoft 365 tenant, configuring it to best practices from day one. This included establishing proper governance, security policies, and setting up SharePoint and Teams to enhance collaboration. We then performed a complex migration, moving user mailboxes from the old Microsoft 365 tenant and, crucially, migrating all files from the local on-premise server to the new cloud environment before the office move deadline.

  • 03

    Enablement & Training

A key goal was to empower the DNC team. We delivered dedicated admin-level training on the new environment and the third-party signature and backup tools. This hands-on training equipped them with the skills to manage day-to-day user onboarding, offboarding, and other administrative tasks internally, reducing their reliance on third-party support.

The results

The project has given the Domain Name Commission a secure, modern, and independent digital workplace, empowering them to work more effectively.

  • Dramatically Improved Security Posture: Building the new tenant to best practices delivered a significant improvement to their Microsoft Secure Score.

  • Significant Cost Savings: We successfully transitioned the DNC to free not-for-profit licensing, eliminating unnecessary software costs.

  • Enhanced Collaboration: The new environment, properly configured with Teams and SharePoint, resolved the long-standing issues with calendar visibility and collaboration between the Microsoft and Google Workspace platforms.

  • Empowered & Self-Sufficient Team: The targeted admin training has given the DNC team the agency to manage their own environment, saving time and money by actioning small changes themselves rather than waiting for external support.

  • When you're reviewing how you’ve been working and you're discovering new tools, the challenge is always baselining how you are using things and how you can use them. When moving from one environment to the other, we were keen to not reinvent the wheel or cause future headaches. Dynamo6 were very good at helping us prioritise, ensure no duplication, and sensibly introduce new tools.

They’ve also enabled us to take a bit more control, run as leanly as possible, as well as delivered the new tools that give us the ability to use time more effectively.

During the project and training, I felt like we were all a big team. With the challenges between Workspace and Microsoft, they were upfront about what they could address and what couldn’t be solved. I also really appreciated the time taken to understand how the Domain Name Commission works and their flexibility to find a solution that works for us.
