Remote work has shifted from a temporary solution to a permanent part of the modern workplace. While the flexibility is a huge benefit, making it a sustainable and healthy practice requires intention.

Whether you work remotely full-time or just a few days a week, it can be challenging to maintain productivity, connection, and work-life balance. Here are six essential tips to help you thrive.

1. Maintain Your Routine

The transition from home life to work life can feel blurry without a commute. To stay focused, try to stick to your pre-work routine. Waking up at the same time, getting dressed, and having breakfast will signal to your brain that it's time to start the workday.

2. Set Clear Boundaries

Staying put and working in the same place that you tend to relax in and keeping to your set working hours can be tricky. It’s hard to compartmentalize the two. If you’re not strict with yourself you could end up eating into your precious free time before you know it. Make an effort to keep to your normal hours, take breaks, and if you can don’t work in the same place as you relax.

3. Sit properly

As tempting as it is to slump on the sofa, your back will thank you for creating an ergonomic setup. There’s a reason offices have proper chairs and desks. If you can, sit at a table in a supportive chair. Your posture and focus will improve.

4. Stay active

You move more than you think during a typical day in the office—walking to meetings, grabbing a coffee, or visiting a colleague's desk. At home, it's easy to stay sedentary. Make a conscious effort to get up, stretch, and move around frequently. You’ll feel better for it.

5. Stay connected

Working remotely doesn't have to mean working in isolation. Keep in touch with your team using tools like Slack, Google Meet, or even an old-fashioned phone call.

At Dynamo6, we run a regular team meeting to have a bit of a natter and share business updates, anyone can join in-person or remotely. The key is that these informal check-ins are crucial for maintaining team culture and connection.

6. Practice empathy and clear communication

With everyone working from different environments, background noise and distractions are inevitable. Remember this gem:.

Always assume the best of intentions and be forgiving of interruptions.

An unintended consequence of staying in touch more via email or messaging apps can be that your tone of voice may not come across in the best way or general miscommunication can happen. When in doubt, a quick video call can clear up any potential misunderstandings.
