Google’s “new” G Suite… What’s in a name?

<< Back to listing

You might have noticed a few changes from our friends at Google lately… what was known for years as Google Apps was recently renamed to G Suite. It is still the same solution with all your key tools including Gmail, Docs, Drive and Calendar and services and pricing remain unchanged.

The key name changes for businesses are Google Apps for Work is now known as G Suite Basic, Google Apps Unlimited for Work is now G Suite Business. For education providers: Google Apps for Education is now known as G Suite for Education.

Along with the name change came some notable upgrades and improvements to offerings in the G Suite. Google are leveraging more and more machine learning to enhance your interactions with their products such as:

  • Predicting the file you are looking for before you even type it into the search
  • Letting you type natural language questions into Google Sheets and turning them into formula
  • Layout suggestions in Google Slides based on colour palette of images you insert

A new feature announced with the name change is Team Drives, which helps manage ownership and sharing within Google Drive at team level rather than individual. It is currently only available to those in the Early Adopter Program but watch for that rolling out soon.

Since the G Suite name change rolled out the updates came thick and fast with the launch of App Maker, a revamp of Google Sites and a very useful productivity addition whereby you can now create custom reusable Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms templates to share within your organisation.
