A new office to call home…. Over the last few years, D6 expanded so rapidly that some seriously increased office space was needed continue this trajectory. We were lucky to find a great team to work with as we co-created this new modern workspace with Stark Property and Designwell to ensure our new home will serve us for many years to come. At the core was creating an office where work is enjoyable and collaboration is easy. All the while keeping functionality front of mind and making sure it looks and feels good.
As part of Hamilton’s initiative to breathe life back into the CBD, the council put the property up for tender to see it get the TLC it desperately needed. Luckily for us, Matt Stark (Stark Property) and Jason Macklow (Good George) purchased and refurbished the former Beggs Wiseman building in 2016. Erected in 1917, it is a registered historically significant building also known as the Former Dalton’s /Michael Hill Building. Stark Property spent over a year on the redevelopment, first rejuvenating the outside in collaboration with Edwards White Architects: the vision for the refurbishment was to use simple accents to highlight the character of the historic building. In Stark’s words: “With a lot of old buildings over the years, people have tried to modernise them which is kind of ironic, instead we always pull stuff back and take buildings back to their former glory.” The vision for the interior was similar, to bring it back to a historical look and feel, including the large windows, original ceilings and classic wooden floor.
A modern workspace with character
The Juxtaposition of a 100-year-old building now housing technology that could not have been dreamed of when it was first constructed is not lost on us. The space is fitted with modern touches from full wall whiteboards, to standing desks and multiple breakout rooms for a cup of tea or a catch-up with a teammate. Modernisation does not stop at aesthetic appeal; a state of the art alarm system that is accessible via mobile keeps things secure. There is no shortage of quirk either: the hot pink air duct running the full length really makes a statement!
This style of refurbishment hails to the ultra modern and trendy styles of Silicon Valley. Experts all agree on one thing when designing an office: don’t sacrifice your ability to focus for the trendiness of collaboration. Despite the open space design, our team can easily get ‘in the zone’ through clever break out spaces and quiet pods. Meetings can be held in either the formal meeting room or the more informal lounge space to avoid distraction. This all means there is always a nook available to hunker down in.
It was great having you!
Our office is feeling a lot warmer since our neighbours, friends, family, and clients all came to see our new digs. We were stoked to have so many people turn up to nosy around and celebrate our new space… although the promise of free Good George beer and cheese probably helped! A lot of love and attention to detail has gone into this fabulous space, a massive thanks to Stark Property and Designwell on the collaboration. The intrigue from the community on the renovation has been encouraging, and we are so proud to be contributing to the revitalisation of Hamilton’s CBD. If you are in the neighbourhood let us know and drop in for a look around!
